Celebrating Single Payer Champions 2023 - Recap

On Tuesday, June 20, 2023, we gathered to acknowledge the incredible work and sustained contributions of our 2023 Single Payer Champions - in person for the first time since 2019.   It was an incredible honor to gather with you to celebrate and recognize the exceptional efforts of our esteemed Single Payer Champions: Buunni Coffee, the Committee of Interns and Residents SEIU, and Dr. Marc Lavietes. Each of them has played a pivotal role in advocating for single payer healthcare and has made significant contributions to our cause. Their dedication and passion have inspired us all and paved the way for a brighter future in healthcare.

This evening was a really exciting occasion for us, as it marked the first time we were able to gather in person since 2019. The joy of reuniting with familiar faces and the excitement of meeting new people who share our passion for advocating for single payer healthcare was palpable throughout the event. Your presence and support made this gathering a resounding success, and we are immensely grateful for your commitment to our cause.

The evening not only provided us with an opportunity to honor our Single Payer Champions but also allowed us to showcase the breadth of work occurring at Physicians for a National Health Program - NY Metro. Together with our allies in the health justice movement, we are dedicated to advocating for the New York Health Act, championing a healthcare system that ensures quality care for all individuals. Your unwavering support has been instrumental in advancing our mission, and we are profoundly grateful for your continued partnership.

For those who were unable to attend but would like to watch a recording of the program, you can do so here, and you can view additional photos here. If you attended and took photos we would love to add them to the folder for others to access as well - please email [email protected].

We would be remiss if we did not acknowledge the tremendous effort and support of our volunteers and board who worked tirelessly behind the scenes to ensure the success of the evening. Your dedication and commitment to our organization's goals have been invaluable, and we are incredibly grateful for your unwavering support.

We are also deeply thankful for the meaningful movement building work being done by our featured Community Activists: Peter Pacheco, RN; Erl Kimmich; Roberta Todd; Helen Krim; Karlynn Holland; and the Cross-Union Retiree Organizing Committee (CROC).

As we reflect on the memorable moments shared during the Spring Benefit, we are filled with a renewed sense of purpose and determination to continue our advocacy for single payer healthcare - as well as a sense of gratitude. As an organization, we rely exclusively on donations from our supporters to pay our staff, enabling the continuity and high quality programming you have come to expect from our Chapter. We would particularly like to thank our sponsors, who made not only this event possible, but enable us to continue our mission: NY State Nurses Association, Committee of Interns & Residents SEIU, Metro NY Healthcare For All, New York Doctors Coalition, Brooklyn for Peace, Community Service Society of NY, 1199 SEIU, PNHP National, Professional Staff Congress at CUNY, Dr. Oliver Fein & Dr. Charlotte Phillips, Dr. Steve Auerbach, Judy Esterquest, Carmelita Blake, Len Rodberg, Dr. Cheryl Kunis, and Dr. Alec Prucknicki.

Once again, thank you for celebrating our 2023 Single Payer Champions with us, for your commitment to our collective cause, and for your unwavering support. We look forward to our continued collaboration as we strive for a healthcare system that truly puts people first.
